UNC Football: Virginia Tech rolls over Tar Heels
UNC was a disaster in the rain on Saturday in Chapel Hill
Saturday was a nightmare for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
As Hurricane Matthew left its mark on Chapel Hill, so did the Virginia Tech Hokies who won 34-3.
The Hokies flat out dominated from the start, taking advantage of four Tar Heels turnovers in the game. UNC opened with a turnover on downs after driving into Hokies territory.
On the two ensuing drives, the Tar Heels then turned it over including Mitch Trubisky’s first interception of the year. Trubisky would finish just 13-of-33 for 78 yards and no touchdowns.
He threw two interceptions on the day.
Despite the two early turnovers, UNC held Virginia Tech to just six points off of them. But it was late in the first half where the Hokies found the endzone and never looked back.
Trailing 13-3 at halftime, UNC fumbled on their opening drive which led to a Hokies touchdown on the next play. On the ensuing drive, punter Tom Sheldon was sacked inside the five yard line. The Hokies scored another touchdown on their ensuing drive.
The weather was crappy in Chapel Hill, but that’s no excuse for the poor performance by the Tar Heels.
Now with the loss, UNC moves to 2-1 in the ACC as the Hokies take over first place at 2-0.
UNC will need a lot to happen, including a Miami loss to Florida State on Saturday night. If they can take care of business against Miami next Saturday, they will be right back in the race. They will need the Hokies to lose at least two more times this season.
