Twitter mourns Te'o's fake girlfriend
On Thursday, the name "Lennay Kekua" popped back up on the Internet as college football fans noted it had been exactly one year since former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o's fake girlfriend supposedly died from "complications due to leukemia."
As you remember, Te'o had a "heroic" performance against Michigan State just a couple of days later, with 12 tackles in a 20-3 victory in East Lansing that sparked the Irish's undefeated regular season. It was in January that Deadspin revealed that Kekua was, in fact, a giant hoax.
And, well, you know the rest.
The Twittersphere certainly hasn't forgotten, as many honored the one-year anniversary with snarky tweets like this:
One year ago today, Lennay Kekua died, before she even had a chance to live. #neverforget — Jonathan Chait (@jonathanchait) September 12, 2013
