TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) When defensive end Tre James finally corralled a scrambling Sam Richardson and pulled the Iowa State quarterback to the ground, sealing Toledo's 30-23 double overtime win, the Rockets' student section spilled onto the field at the Glass Bowl.
The win didn't send the same shockwaves through college football as last week's 16-12 victory over then-No. 18-ranked Arkansas in Little Rock. In fact, the Rockets were the favorite here Saturday night and quarterback Phillip Ely expressed disappointment with the Rockets' performance overall.
But it did mark the first time in school history that the Mid-American Conference team familiar with wins over big-time programs beat two Power 5 teams in the same season. That, and the excitement of overtime, was enough to thrill the crowd of 23,104.
''Our effort and attitude is phenomenal and that showed on the field,'' said Ely. ''I'm definitely happy that we won, but there are some things we need to fix. If we play that way down the road, we're going to get beat.''
While the game marked the return of Toledo's Doak Walker Award candidate Kareem Hunt, it was his backup, Damion Jones-Moore, who scored the game-winning touchdown on a 10-yard sweep on the Rockets' second overtime possession.
''You can't think about stuff like playing time. It's a team sport and we're all out here working,'' Jones-Moore said. ''Whenever you get your opportunity, you have to step up.''
On Iowa State's final possession, Richardson eluded a handful of Toledo defenders on a last-gasp, fourth-and-goal play on Iowa State's ensuing possession before James caught him from behind to end the game.
''To our fans and students, this was their win,'' Toledo coach Matt Campbell said. ''This place was electric, and quite honestly that is what is so special about the Glass Bowl. The credit goes to all of them that stayed until the end.''
Iowa State's Cole Netten and Toledo's Jameson Vest exchanged field goals on the teams' first overtime possession after Netton missed a potential game-winning, 32-yard attempt as time expired on regulation.
Hunt, who missed Toledo's first two games due to a violation of team rules, rushed for 129 yards on 24 carries. He limped off the field with an undisclosed injury on the Rockets' second-to-last offensive play, setting up Jones-Moore's game-winner.
Toledo can now claim its seventh win against Power 5 conference teams over the past 10 seasons.
Ely finished with 138 passing yards, including a touchdown to Alonzo Russell, and was inadvertently part of a second touchdown when Alex Zmolik recovered his fumble in the end zone. That gave the Rockets (2-0) a 20-10 lead in the third quarter, but Iowa State (1-2) scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Richardson connected with D'Vario Montgomery on a 59-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and Trever Ryen scored on a 1-yard-run early in the fourth for Iowa State. Richardson completed 25 of 42 passes for 269 yards.
The Cyclones, who were averaging just 70 yards rushing in their first two games - worst among all Power 5 schools - gained 207 yards on the ground against the Rockets. Mike Warren led the team with 126 yards on 21 carries.
