Shaun Rutherford threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Texas St. beat Stephen F. Austin 41-37 on Saturday night.
In the first quarter, Rutherford scored on a 5-yard run and connected with Chase Harper on a 16-yard pass for another touchdown. But it was Will Johnson who got the Bobcats on the scoreboard first with a field goal.
In the third quarter, Rutherford connected with Isaiah Battle for a 98-yarder and again with Harper. Rutherford was 21 of 26 for 301 yards passing.
Cordell Roberson broke the record for all-time touchdown receptions for Stephen F. Austin and the Southland Conference. He needed two TDs coming into the game to surpass the 31 touchdown receptions of Simmie Yarborough (Southeastern Louisiana).
Gus Johnson scored twice for the Lumberjacks, once on a 28-yard run and on a 10-yard pass from Brady Attaway. Johnson's touchdown reception was his first.
