Texas has to be kicking itself for letting Heisman hopeful Corey Coleman get away

Even in this era of frenetic spread offenses, the numbers Baylor junior wide receiver Corey Coleman is putting up are staggering.

On Thursday night against Kansas State, Coleman had 11 catches for 216 yards and two touchdowns. Through eight games, Coleman has 58 catches for 1,178 yards and 20 touchdowns. To put that into better context, only 14 teams in the country are averaging more receiving touchdowns per game than Coleman, and one of those teams is Baylor.

Talking to coaches in the Big 12 this week, they rave about Coleman's explosiveness but say the most underrated aspect about the 5-foot-11, 195-pounder is his strength and how dynamic he is after the catch.

"He is ridiculously talented," said one Big 12 head coach this week.

Coleman deserves to be in the Heisman discussion. The Bears did have their hands full at Kansas State, escaping with a 31-24 win. If they can stay unbeaten and Coleman keeps producing like this, he's probably going to at least get invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony. The fact that quarterback Seth Russell is sidelined for the rest of the season also means Coleman becomes Baylor's sole candidate -- although with TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin right down the road, it probably will undermine some of the regional support for both the Horned Frog and the Bear.

One last thing on Coleman, a native of Richardson, Texas: He is just the latest local star who Texas whiffed on in recruiting. Looking back at recruiting stories, Coleman talked about how a Longhorns assistant told him a scholarship offer was coming soon, but it never came. And Baylor has to be thrilled about that.

Coleman, all by himself, has over 100 more receiving yards and four times as many touchdown grabs as the entire Texas team this season. In fact, Coleman actually has more touchdown catches already this season than the Longhorns have as a team if you combine last season and this season (19).
