Syracuse Football: The defense is young and there will be growing pains

The Syracuse football team lost another game because of their bad defense. While in the post-game head coach Dino Babers cited the youth of this unit.

The Syracuse football team had their moments in a wild 50-33 shootout loss to the Fighting Irish. But ultimately they couldn’t keep up and a lot of that had to do with their defense.

They gave up 600 yards of offense again and their secondary was decimated by Deshone Kizer. We all expected a shootout because both of these defenses are god awful and that’s exactly what we got.

There are plenty of reasons why this defense for the Orange is terrible. This defense is a land of misfit toys. Several players are playing a different defense than they know. While the players they have are battling a slew of injuries. But after the game, head coach Dino Babers cited the age of this unit as their detriment.

“There’s always a level of concern when you give up the points and yards we’ve given up. Our defense has so many freshmen and so many guys hurt. This defense is going against 21 and 22 year old guys. We have to give them time to grow up. Just because it’s 2016, it doesn’t make our players 22. We’ve got some 18 year old guys going against some grown men. Some of you guys would have trouble going against them at your age. So we just got to give them time. They aren’t going to get older just because we want them too.”

While those are all legitimate points from the head coach. When are we going to reach a point where these excuses aren’t going to work?

Because the deeper we get into this season, the more it seems like this is a trial test course. Whatever happens, happens.

If this truly is a test-run, there are a lot of things to be excited about. The offense at times has looked unstoppable. While at others it has looked like a horror show straight from Alfred Hitchcock.

Ultimately Coach Babers perfectly articulated the gist of this season in a nut shell. Or perhaps in a bakery?

“I think when it’s all said and done, you guys will like the cake that we’re baking,” Babers said. “Right now is not the time to eat the batter. Wait for us to bake the cake.”
