Andy Summerlin threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as Samford used a big first quarter to beat Florida A&M 27-20.

Samford (2-1) jumped to an early 17-0 first quarter lead behind touchdown runs by Fabian Truss and Summerlin. A blocked punt by Cody Brooks set up the latter score.

Florida A&M (1-2) managed just 219 yards of total offense but two interception returns for touchdowns kept the Rattlers in the game. Patrick Aiken had a 93-yard return for a score in the second quarter for Florida A&M's first points. Devonte Johnson then scored on a 28-yard interception return in the third to cut Samford's lead to 24-20.

But the Bulldogs tacked on a field goal and held on for the win, bouncing back from last week's 31-21 loss to Arkansas in which Samford lost a fourth-quarter lead.
