Sumlin facing off against former pupil Brian Polian this week
Has the student become the master? We'll know the answer this weekend, as Nevada, and former Kevin Sumlin assistant turned head coach Brian Polian, head into College Station to challenge the Aggies.
"It’s something we take pride in," Sumlin said, according to 247Sports. "This is my eighth year as a head coach. To have that many guys that are head coaches in other programs, that helps attract assistant coaches to your program.
"That’s something I got from working for Bob Stoops, the number of guys in that program that have become head coaches and an atmosphere that allows you to do that."
However Sumlin didn't sound too enthusiastic when asked if enjoys facing off against a coach that he helped train, although it sounds as if he got to kid around with Polian before facing him this weekend.
"No, you don’t like playing those guys," Sumlin said. "The more that you’re in this business, you start playing guys that are your friends and that’s never easy, whatever happens. In this game, there’s always a winner and a loser.
"We haven’t really talked but he texted me Sunday night. He said it himself. He said, ‘I’ll huddle if you huddle.’ I said, ‘We’ll huddle on kickoffs and punts.’ I didn’t really get much of a response after that."
