Wake Forest defensive coordinator Mike Elko is expected to become the new DC at Notre Dame, a source told FOX Sports Thursday.

Elko is in his third season at Wake, after serving in the same role under coach Dave Clawson at Bowling Green. Wake Forest is ranked No. 20 in scoring defense, No. 13 in sacks and No. 10 in turnovers gained.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly fired Irish defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder at midseason in the midst of what became a 4-8 year.
