Source: Gators OC Doug Nussmeier out of the running at Southern Miss

Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier, considered the top candidate to become the new head coach at Southern Miss, is staying at UF, a source told FOX Sports on Saturday.

The 45-year-old former NFL quarterback, who has coached in the CFL and NFL as well, didn't feel like the situation at USM was the right fit.

Nussmeier has been an offensive coordinator at Fresno State, Washington, Alabama and Michigan prior to coming to UF before the 2015 season. In eight seasons as a coordinator Nussmeier's offense has produced seven 1,000-yard rushers, including UF's Kelvin Taylor running for 1,035 last fall.

In 2012, Nussmeier helped the Tide win a national title. That season Alabama set school records for rushing and passing touchdowns, total points scored and total offense.

USM is looking to replace Todd Monken, who left last weekend to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' new offensive coordinator. A source told FOX Sports Saturday that there is some strong booster support at USM for Alcorn State head coach Jay Hopson, a former Golden Eagles defensive coordinator.
