Sooner linerbacker Frank Shannon returns from suspension

Running back Joe Mixon is set to make his Oklahoma debut after a year suspension for a domestic violence incident and now senior linebacker Frank Shannon is set to return for his one-year suspension as well.

The Sooners open practice Thursday.

Shannon sat out all of last season, suspended by the school for violations of a sexual misconduct policy. The case went all the way to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Oklahoma investigated the incident, which fell under Title IX responsibility after Shannon was accused of rape. The victim never pressed charges but OU fought for the right to enforce its suspension of Shannon.

Shannon spent the last year in Dallas, according to Kish and took online course to remain eligible.

"He served his sentence and ultimately ended up having the opportunity to make a decision to come back," linebackers coach Tim Kish told the Tulsa World.

Shannon was the team's leading tackler in 2013 with 92 as well as an interception, but now he'll have to beat out linebackers Jordan Evans and Dominique Alexander for a starting spot at inside linebacker.
