Smith takes over for O'Boyle as Chadron St. coach
Chadron State athletic director Brad Smith is returning to the sidelines as head football coach for the rest of the season, taking over for Bill O'Boyle.
School president Janie Park said Monday that O'Boyle remains employed. She said O'Boyle has been relieved of his coaching duties so he can prepare for an investigation into possible NCAA rules violations.
The Division II school announced last week it self-reported its concerns about football fundraising to the NCAA and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Details were not disclosed.
Park said O'Boyle could return as coach in 2012. He's 57-21 in seven seasons. He didn't immediately return a phone message.
Smith coached the Eagles from 1987-2004 and was 133-56-1.
The Eagles are 3-4 overall and tied for third in the RMAC at 2-3.
