Should five All-Big 12 selections suggest good fortune for Sooners?
Hype and expectation didn't pan out in 2014, and heading into 2015, Oklahoma fans don't even know who their quarterback will be. What they do know is that the Sooners, at least on paper, bring back plenty of talent to make a run.
With five players named Wednesday to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, the Sooners matched 2014 Big 12 co-champ TCU for the second-most selections behind the league's other co-champ Baylor, which boasts seven players, including the pick for Defensive Player of the Year in defensive end Shawn Oakman.
The Sooners placed three offensive players on the team: running back Samaje Perine, wide receiver Sterling Shepard and running back/kick return specialist Alex Ross. Linebacker Eric Striker and cornerback Zack Sanchez were named on the defensive side.
Of course, every team would like to be as fortunate as TCU and have its quarterback named as the pick for league Offensive Player of the Year. Boykin is also a leading Heisman Trophy candidate.
The Sooners thought they had a pretty good quarterback heading into last season, but inconsistency plagued Trevor Knight and now he's fighting for his job with Texas Tech transfer Baker Mayfield.
But even with the uncertainty under center, the release of the preseason team has OU in the thick of the Big 12 race in terms of individual talent. Now it's up to coach Bob Stoops and his reshuffled staff to put it all together.
