Should Ducks start Jeff Lockie until Vernon Adams Jr. is healthy?
There's no doubt that Vernon Adams Jr. is struggling to play as he deals right a broken right index finger. While healthy, the Oregon coaching staff believes that Adams give the team the best chance to succeed. However, the coaching staff also may have to go in another direction as Adams tries to recover.
Adams was pulled in the second quarter of Oregon's 62-20 loss to Utah on Saturday. While coach Mark Helfrich said that Adams was pulled because of his execution on the field, its safe to assume that had Adams been healthy he would not have been pulled.
In relief of Adams, backup QB Jeff Lockie threw for 139 yards and a touchdown, while also throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble. He is a good quarterback, though he is limited. While Adams attempts to get healthy, Lockie may provide Oregon with its best opportunity to win games.
Helfrich would not say which QB would start against Colorado next week; however, he did say that the QB situation is unsettled.
“It’s definitely different than it was the first game of the season," Helfrich said on Saturday. "There’s no doubt about that.”
Adams is still Oregon's guy, when healthy. But while he's not, it may be time to give Lockie the keys to the car.
