San Diego 42, Azusa Pacific 40

Mason Mills threw for 402 yards and San Diego scored 27 fourth-quarter points to hold off Azusa Pacific 42-40 Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.

Mills was 27 of 42 passing with four touchdowns, including two during a fourth quarter in which 48 points were scored by the two teams.

Mills had TDs of 59, 59, 6 and 35 yards. The latter, which went to Kyle Lokanc with 2:14 remaining, gave the Toreros a 42-33 lead and helped them withstand a late touchdown from Azusa Pacific.

The Cougars, an NAIA school, kept it close by rushing for 317 yards. Quarterback John van den Raadt rushed for 165 yards and two TDs but was just 8 for 29 passing for 128 yards. Johnell Murphy added 135 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Azusa.

Sam Hoekstra had 11 catches for 106 yards and a TD for San Diego.
