Timothy Flanders rushed 15 times for 120 yards, including two touchdowns, to earn a spot in the Bearkats record book as Sam Houston State beat Incarnate Word 54-7 on Saturday night.
With his performance in the Bearkats season opener, Flanders became the school's all-time leading rusher. Flanders also increased his school record for rushing touchdowns to 37.
Keshawn Hill scored twice on runs of 11 and 27 yards. Chance Nelson added an 11-yard score on a pass from Brian Bell, and Terrance Robinson returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
The 2,709 yards accumulated by Flanders broke the record of 2,688 set by Charles Harris (1991-1994).
For the Cardinals (1-1), Trent Rios caught an 18-yard pass from Zach Rhodes for a touchdown. The Division II team held a brief one-point lead in the first quarter, but Sam Houston was ahead by halftime.
