PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) Rutgers coach Chris Ash has named Drew Mehringer as his offensive coordinator.

Mehringer, who will also coach the quarterbacks, was the wide receivers coach at Houston this past season.

Ash said in a statement that the 28-year-old Mehringer is a rising star who understands how he wants the program structured.

Ash says Mehringer will take care of the players and be a good recruiter.

Mehringer was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at James Madison in 2014. He was a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2012 and 2013, serving as the tight ends and receivers coach in 2012 and offensive line coach in 2013.

Houston ran a power spread this year under coach Tom Hermann. James Madison ran an up-tempo offense under Mehringer.

Mehringer is Ash's second hire. Ash hired Vince Okruch as his special teams coordinator last week.
