Report: S. Carolina 'optimistic' DE will recover from gunshot wounds

Published Dec. 17, 2015 7:32 p.m. ET

South Carolina officials are "optimistic" that freshman defender Shameik Blackshear will fully recover after reportedly being shot multiple times and seriously injured Wednesday, The State (Columbia, S.C.) newspaper reported.

The paper stated that while Columbia police didn't directly ID Blackshear by name, it cites "sources close to the incident" who have confirmed the man shot in the Club at Carolina Stadium apartment complex was the player.

Columbia police officials said the shooting occurred at the Club at Carolina Stadium, located at 100 Catawba Circle – just a stone’s throw from the Founder’s Park stadium used by the USC baseball team – at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Columbia police collected forensic evidence and talked with people at the scene following the shooting, officials said. Investigators are working to determine a motive for the shooting, while attempting to identify a suspect or suspects.

“He’s doing well,” Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said via the State. “Right now we are just concerned with his health, but as far as I’ve been told, he’s doing well.”

Police told the paper the victim was in serious condition Thursday afternoon, but a Friday report from The State says that school officials are  hopeful Blackshear will fully recover.

“We are optimistic that he is going to be OK,” AD Ray Tanner said.

Blackshear was a highly recruited member of the Gamecocks' 2015 recruiting class but appeared in only two games this season.
