Report: Friedgen may be on way out

Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson refused to address the future of football coach Ralph Friedgen, leaving open the possibility that a change could occur as soon as next week.

After Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin accepted the head job at Vanderbilt on Friday, Anderson was asked during a conference call whether he wanted Friedgen back in 2011 to complete the final year of his contract.

Anderson declined comment, and later said, ''Next week, everyone will understand where we're going.''

The statement sparked reports that Anderson is going to ask the 63-year-old coach to retire and take a buyout. Friedgen is slated to be paid $2 million next season.

One month ago, Anderson said Friedgen would be back in 2011. Friedgen directed the Terps to a 8-4 record, a berth in the Military Bowl and was named Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year for the second time.

This is Friedgen's 10th season at his alma mater. He owns an 74-50 record, and the Terrapins received seven bowl bids under his direction.
