Cory McCaffrey ran for three first-quarter touchdowns and quarterback Connor Kavanaugh added another scoring run in the opening period as Portland State cruised to a 52-0 victory over Southern Oregon on Saturday in both teams' season opener.
Portland State scored 31 points in the first quarter and led 38-0 at halftime. All those points came easy as Southern Oregon, an NAIA school, sputtered in all phases of the game.
Kavanaugh and McCaffrey both left the game before halftime. Kavanaugh finished with 48 yards passing and 78 yards rushing. McCaffrey added 69 yards rushing on 13 carries.
The Vikings' defense held Southern Oregon to 107 yards of total offense. Raiders starting quarterback Mike McDonald completed 11 of 23 passes for 24 yards.
