Planning for success: West Virginia's Jarrod Harper ready to step up

BY foxsports • October 13, 2015

Karl Joseph is gone, and it's no coincidence that West Virginia's defense hasn't been the same since his ACL injury. But life goes on for the Mountaineers, and if they're going to salvage the season, other folks on defense are going to need to step up.

Jarrod Harper might be the guy who has to do so.

Harper, who is Joseph's replacement, is plenty capable. After reviewing Saturday's game film, head coach Dana Holgorsen was impressed with what he saw.

"He was aggressive in the run game, and that was probably the biggest thing we were concerned with is losing the physical nature that Karl brings to the table," Holgorsen said. "Nobody is going to be able to bring that to the level that he did, but Jarrod did a great job of stepping in."

Joseph, to his credit, seems more invested in this program than ever despite his injury. He was wearing a headset and helping out with calls during the game.

"That’s the kind of kid he is," West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. "He wants to be around. He wants to be on the sidelines and out there at practice and in the meetings. He wants to continue to stay involved.

"That’s what captains do. He’s the leader of this entire team."
