Pitt scores twice late, edges Georgia Tech 37-34

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:16 a.m. ET

PITTSBURGH (AP) Chris Blewitt hit a 31-yard field goal on the final play as Pittsburgh rallied past Georgia Tech 37-34 on Saturday.

The Panthers (4-2, 1-1 ACC) trailed by a touchdown when Georgia Tech's J.J. Green raced in from 10 yards to give the Yellow Jackets (3-3, 1-3) their first lead with 5:22 to go.

Pitt tied it when tight end Scott Orndoff caught a tipped pass and outran the defense for a 74-yard score. Georgia Tech opted to go for it on fourth down at its own 34 with 2:25 remaining but Dedrick Mills was stopped for no gain.

The Panthers drove to the Georgia Tech 12 to set up Blewitt's winner, which smacked off the right upright and through as time expired. It's the second straight season Pitt topped the Yellow Jackets on a late kick by Blewitt, whose 52 career field goals are a school record.

Peterman finished 14 of 202 for 192 yards and the long score to Orndoff. The Panthers spread the ball around while running for 215 yards, including a 24-yard run by 300-pound Pitt lineman Brian O'Neill on a designed throwback lateral.

Green added a 96-yard kickoff return for a score for the Yellow Jackets, who have lost three straight following a 3-0 start.

Georgia Tech was limited to 241 yards rushing and only got nine yards on four attempts on its final drive as coach Paul Johnson's gamble to hold onto the ball backfired and instead put Pitt in position to win it.

TAKEAWAY

Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets were much improved following losses at home to Clemson and Miami but the defense struggled all day and yielded at the end.

Pitt: The Panthers are getting more comfortable when things get close. Following last-minute losses to Oklahoma State and North Carolina, Pitt has responded by making the plays it needed in each of the last two weeks against Marshall and the Yellow Jackets.
