Penn State Football Recruiting Roundup: October 6, 2016
Welcome back to Victory Bell Rings’ weekly look at all things Penn State Football recruiting with the weekly recruiting roundup.
Welcome back everyone to the weekly Penn State recruiting roundup! This weekend, the Nittany Lions will host the undefeated Maryland Terrapins. And, it will be a big recruiting weekend.
Furthermore, a lot has happened in the past week in the world of Penn State recruiting. The Nittany Lions have lost a commit, they have had a commit visit elsewhere, and their most talented commit took in their thrilling victory at Beaver Stadium over Minnesota. Anyway, let’s get started.
Let’s get the bad news out of the way first, deal? Deal!
Derrek Pitts De-Commits
On Monday afternoon Derrek Pitts de-committed form Penn State. This news was not surprising at all. Honestly, I had been expecting Pitts to de-commit for a few weeks.
More from Victory Bell Rings
Pitts surprised everyone when he committed to Penn State over West Virginia in July. Ultimately, I look for Pitts to end up a Mountaineer. You can read more about his de-commitment here.
Micah Parsons Visits
This past Saturday class of 2018 commit Micah Parsons visited Penn State. This came the weekend after Parsons visited Tennessee. What a game for Micah to visit, eh?
Parsons is arguably the best high school football player in the country regardless of class. So it goes without saying he is very sought after. The Nittany Lions just need to keep getting him on campus.
As long as Penn State continues to get Parsons on campus, while showing improvement on the field, I believe they will be just fine here. If not, programs like Ohio State, Tennessee, and Alabama will become tough to fend off. Luckily for the Nittany Lions, last Saturday’s game was an unreal atmosphere and a great one for any recruit to attend.
This Weekend
This weekend is shaping up to be a big recruiting weekend for the Nittany Lions. Not only are they playing a regional team that recruits many of the same player, but they are also expecting a lot of visitors to be on campus for Saturday’s noon kick off against Maryland.
There will be visitors from the 2017, 2018, and 2019 recruiting cycles at Beaver Stadium on Saturday. Hopefully this Saturday’s game is half as exciting as last Saturday’s was. Because having an atmosphere like that can go a long way in recruiting. Just ask Mike Gesicki, who has been very open over the years about why he committed to Penn State. The reason he did was due to the atmosphere he experienced at the four-overtime thriller against Michigan in 2013.
One visitor this weekend will be defensive tackle Ben Hutch. This Saturday will be the three-star prospects first visit to Happy Valley.
Ben Hutch will be on his official visit to Happy Valley this weekend. Hutch is a native of Hillsboro, Tennessee, and will be a tough pull for the Nittany Lions. Louisville will be tough to beat here. However, anytime you get an official visit you have got a shot.
Class of 2017 offensive line commit Michael Miranda will also visit this weekend. Miranda has visited for every home game this season and has previously stated he intends to be at each home game. Miranda is set to enroll early in January.
Another player to keep an eye on this weekend is class of 2019 athlete Jalen Williams. Williams has visited Penn State before, but Saturday will be the first time the Maryland native has attended a game at Beaver Stadium. He already holds an offer from North Carolina, and I would look for Penn State to offer at some point down the road.
Class of 2019 defensive tackle Antonio Alfano will also be on hand this weekend. Alfano is shaping up to be one of the top defensive tackle recruits in the country for 2019. He has already visited Penn State multiple times in the past and the Nittany Lions are in a very good spot early on.
As always, the visitor list will be bigger than this. These are just a few names to keep an eye on this weekend.
That will do it for this week’s recruiting roundup. Be sure to stick with VBR for the latest Penn State football recruiting news.
