Oklahoma ended up winning the game, 66-59, and afterward the two opposing quarterbacks were honored by separate organizations as national player of the Week. Mahomes was so honored with the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award as the week’s best player, and Mayfield received the Davey O’Brien weekly award as National Quarterback of the Week.
On Tuesday, Mayfield and Mahomes were named two of the five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. This is the 30th year for the award, which honors the top college quarterback for his accomplishments both on and off the field.
To be eligible for the award, candidates must be a senior or a fifth-year junior on schedule to graduate with their class.
Mayfield and Mahomes lead the Big 12 and are at or near the top nationally in multiple offensive categories this season.
In Big 12 games, Mayfield leads the conference in passing touchdowns (20), pass completion percentage (.743) and pass efficiency rating (212.8). Mahomes is second in the conference in all three categories.
The other three national finalists for the 2016 Golden Arm Award are Deshaun Watson of Clemson, Luke Falk of Washington State (coached by former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach) and Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina.
Only one Oklahoma player is a previous winner of the award. Jason White won the Unitas Golden Arm Award in 2004.
