OU hands kicking, punting duties to true freshman

Last week, the Sooners announced their quarterback situation.

Monday, coach Bob Stoops, in his weekly meet with the media lunch in Norman, Okla., said true freshman Austin Seibert would handle both the kicking and punting duties for the Sooners.

It's been a close fight," Stoops said. "The other guys are close enough. We'll see how it goes. Seibert has really got a great mentality and has been confident."

Seibert beat out senior Nick Hodgson for the job. Hodgson will handle all the kick-off duties.

OU opens its season Saturday night against Akron in Norman.

Meanwhile, Stoops said running back Joe Mixon, a freshman who was suspended all of last season, may be involved in the punt return game. Sterling Shepard, OU's leading receiver, could also be involved there. However, Shepard was hurt a good portion of last season, so the coaching staff may want to hold him out of that spot.
