Reigning Water Payton Award winner Taylor Heinicke threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns as Old Dominion outlasted The Citadel in a thrilling 59-58 shootout Saturday night.

Heinicke shined when his team needed it the most, connecting with Larry Pinkard for a 70-yard touchdown with 3:36 left in the game. Heinicke and Pinkard hooked up again for the two-point conversion, giving the Monarchs (2-2) a 59-52 lead.

Old Dominion attempted an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff. The Citadel (1-3) recovered, setting the stage for Ben Dupree to find Jake Stenson for a 23-yard touchdown with 1:39 to go.

Old Dominion stuffed Dupree on the two-point conversion attempt, preserving their 59-58 win.
