Oklahoma suspends running back Joe Mixon for team rules violation

Oklahoma suspended sophomore running back Joe Mixon for Thursday game at Iowa State for a violation of team rules, the team announced.

"OU sets very high standards and they must be met by all of our student-athletes," said Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops.

The school didn't address the specific violation, but Mixon said in a statement that he "did not respond appropriately to parking attendants and understand and accept the consequences."

Mixon's attorney Blake Johnson said that he was give a parking ticket on campus Tuesday morning.

"He was frustrated, as most of us are when we get a ticket," Johnson told The Oklahoman. "He tore the ticket up in front of the parking attendant, and threw it on the ground."

Johnson said the parking attendant filed a complaint with the campus police after the incident.

Mixon is the team's leading rusher with 813 yards and has scored five touchdowns this season. Mixon was suspended for the entire 2014 season after being charged with a misdemeanor for punching a female student in July 2014.

For the Iowa State game, Oklahoma will be without its top two running backs as Samaje Perine has missed the last two games with a muscle pull. The only other running back listed on the depth chart for the Iowa State game is true freshman Abdul Adams, who has 41 carries for 225 yards.

Oklahoma (6–2, 5–0 Big 12) has beaten Iowa State (1–7, 0–5) 17 straight times.
