Three Navy football players will face charges of sexually assaulting a female midshipman last year, NBC News reported after being told by a U.S. military official.

All three men were members of the football team at the time of the incident, which occurred when the woman told investigators she was assaulted at an off-campus party in April 2012.

A spokesman for the Naval Academy confirmed that the case will be sent to Article 32 proceedings, which is the military version of a preliminary hearing. Despite the military official's report, it is not clear if all three men will face charges.

The woman initially reported the incident in 2012, at which point the Naval Criminal Investigative Service launched an investigation. After the woman later stopped cooperating with investigators, the investigation was halted.

However, the woman renewed her complaint in February 2013 and the investigation continued.

According to NBC, the woman was friends with the men, but the three men allegedly had non-consensual sex with her at different times during a night of heavy drinking.

One of the men had his graduation put on hold pending the investigation. The other two are currently in their junior years.
