Notre Dame assistant coach McCarthy undergoing cancer treatment

First-year Notre Dame defensive graduate assistant and safeties coach Kyle McCarthy has a "very treatable form of cancer" and is undergoing treatment, according to a series of posts on his Twitter account Thursday.

The four-part message reads:

"A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with a very treatable form of cancer. Yesterday, I began chemotherapy as the next step in eliminating ... this disease. I'm truly blessed to have such amazing love and support from family and friends. Thank you to everyone for your ... thoughts and prayers over the last few weeks. I expect a full recovery and look forward to returning to the team during and after ... my treatment. Go Irish!"'

The school said McCarthy will take intermittent leaves of absence from the team as he fights the disease.

McCarthy, 27, played four seasons for Notre Dame from 2006-2009. The former Irish captain and safety recorded 240 tackles and eight interceptions over 50 games. He played in two NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011.
