Northwestern State used a balanced offense and three John Shaughnessy field goals to beat Lamar 30-23 Saturday night in Southland Conference play.

The Demons (3-3, 1-1) led 10-0 on Shaughnessy's 41-yard, first-quarter field goal and Phillip Harvey's 26-yard touchdown run. Lamar's James Washington returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown, but Northwestern State responded with Brad Henson's 4-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Nims for a 17-7 halftime lead.

Lamar's Caleb Berry threw for two touchdowns, the first a 27-yarder to Kevin Johnson to pull Lamar within 17-14. Shaughnessy then kicked another field goal, a 42-yarder, making it 20-14. Justin Stout's 28-yard field goal cut it to 20-17.

Robert Walker, who rushed for 103 yards, scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth. Shaughnessy's third field goal made it 30-17. Berry's second touchdown pass, an 8-yarder to Jordan Edwards, drew the Cardinals within seven, but the team got no closer.
