The game between No. 6 South Carolina and North Carolina was delayed for nearly two hours because of lightning and heavy rain.

The contest was stopped Thursday night with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter with the Gamecocks ahead 27-10. Officials sent both teams to the locker room as the crowd of 81,572 cleared out of Williams-Brice Stadium or took shelter in the parking lot.

The delay last one hour, 44 minutes.

Several lightning strikes flashed near the stadium and heavy rain pelted the field. The weather cleared out about 10 p.m. and the teams returned to the field for a 10-minute warm-up period before resuming.
