Monitor says Penn State's sanctions could be loosened again next year

The former U.S. senator brought in to monitor changes at Penn State says that it should keep doing what it's been doing, and that a further loosening of NCAA sanctions is possible next year.

Pennlive.com reports athletics integrity monitor George Mitchell briefly addressed university trustees Friday, saying the school needs to maintain the effort it has been demonstrating.

At Mitchell's recommendation, the NCAA in September decided to more quickly restore football scholarships taken away temporarily last year as part of a consent decree. The NCAA took action over the school's handling of the Jerry Sandusky child molestation scandal.

Mitchell didn't tell the trustees which other penalties might be reduced. Penn State is paying a $60 million fine and serving a multi-year ban on postseason play.
