Mississippi rival QBs meet at Manning Passing Academy
The Manning Passing Academy has become a big deal in the world of constant development and year-round recruiting -- and not just for the campers.
This year's camp, the 20th since the family founded it in 1996, took place this past weekend in Thibodaux, LA, with 37 current college quarterbacks serving as counselors for the 1,200-plus participants. Since the Mannings played at Ole Miss (Archie and Eli) and Tennessee (Peyton), respectively, there is somewhat of an unwritten rule that the quarterbacks from those schools will be among the counselors each year, and this year was no different, as the Vols' Josh Dobbs and the Rebels' Chad Kelly made the trip.
For Peyton, of course, there was no question as to which participant was his favorite.
"I pull for Dobbs," Peyton told the Associated Press, "and obviously any insight that I can share with him or questions that he has, I'm glad to answer."
The Associated Press also noted that Peyton said with a smirk that he tries not to share too many tips with the quarterbacks for Tennessee's SEC opponents, including Kelly.
Also in attendance this year was Mississippi State QB and Heisman contender Dak Prescott, who met Kelly at the camp for the first time. Kelly transferred to Ole Miss from Clemson after being dismissed for "conduct detrimental to the team," but Prescott said he didn't see a troublemaking side to his new archrival.
"I'm not going to sit here and try to judge him or try to tell you how I feel about his personality, because honestly, I don't know him," Prescott told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. "I feel like he's a good guy. He's doing the things he needs to do."
According to the Clarion-Ledger, Prescott did mention, however, that Kelly could "spin" the football pretty well, based on his observations at the Manning camp.
