Michigan Signing Day summary: Rankings, trends and more

BY foxsports • February 5, 2016

Jim Harbaugh's first full year of recruiting for Michigan was a smashing success.

The coach signed the No. 1 player in the nation at three different positions -- defensive tackle, offensive guard and kicker -- as he spanned the country spreading the Maize and Blue gospel.

He hauled in a pair of five-star recruits and 13 four-stars while also dominating the headlines for much of last summer and again in January.

How many can help right away remains to be seen, but it looks like a major step forward in building a roster that can compete for the national championship.

Scout.com national class ranking: 6

Big Ten ranking: 2

Top-rated prospect: Rashan Gary, a five-star defensive tackle from Paramus Catholic in New Jersey, was the No. 1 player in the country regardless of position.

Biggest areas of need potentially addressed: Linebacker, running back

Best long-term buy: Ben Bredeson is a four-star prospect from Hartland (Wisc.) Arrowhead who is rated the No. 1 offensive guard in the country. He'll join a veteran group this year that could have an exodus via graduation after the 2016 season, so this upcoming year of development figures to be crucial for him and the team.

In state? This is a key area of talent acquisition for every school even though some live in different neighborhoods than others.

Michigan ended up with three of the 14 four-star recruits in the state: defensive back Lavert Hill of Detroit King, offensive lineman Michael Onwenu of Detroit Cass Tech and kicker Quinn Nordin of Rockford. Hill and Onwenu were the No. 2 and 3 players in the state, respectively. By comparison, Michigan State had four of the four-stars while Notre Dame signed two.

Ranking trend: Harbaugh's first full-year class jumped up 29 spots from the small one he signed only a little more than a month after being hired as Brady Hoke's replacement. It was also much better than the class Hoke signed in 2014 (27th), but Harbaugh couldn't quite replicate what Hoke did with his first two full-year classes. The 2012 class ranked fourth in the country while the '13 group was second.

Harbaugh's sixth-ranked class is the eighth top 10 class signed by Michigan in the 15 years since Scout.com began doing rankings. The overall average ranking for the Wolverine recruiting classes over that time is 12.5 nationally and 2.5 in the Big Ten.

Over the last four years, Michigan's classes rank 17.5 nationally and 3.8 in the Big Ten.
