Memphis player scores 'inside-the-park HR' without even getting a hit

A player for Memphis' college baseball team made a heads up play after hitting into a fielder's choice, taking three extra bases on USF's defense to score the eventual game-winning run during the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament Friday.

The play occurred during the bottom of the sixth with the game tied at one and a runner on second for the Tigers. With one out, Memphis’ Brandon Montgomery hit one into the hole where the shortstop made a nice play to get the runner on second in a rundown.

The runner, Carter White, was tagged out, but Montgomery raced to second while his teammate was in a pickle. Then, after White was tagged out, Montgomery took off again and reached third. Realizing nobody was at home either, he headed home and scored to make it 2-1.

Here's the play:

This needs to be shown to every little league team and high school team across the country. Heck, show it to college teams and those in the MLB. Why? Because this play is the classic example of why you always have to keep your head in the game. The Bulls acted like the play was over and time was out when it wasn't, and it cost them.

The Tigers would win the game 4-1 before getting blown out in Saturday’s semifinals by Houston. But that play made the whole weekend worth the trip to the Tampa area.
