McCrary blames himself for 'bad decisions' in Vandy's loss
Vanderbilt came up just short -- literally -- against Western Kentucky in Thursday night's season-opening 14-12 loss. Afterward, quarterback Wade McCrary said he had no one to blame but himself.
McCrary threw two interceptions in the end zone as the Commodores came away with a total of zero points in their first three possessions that got inside the Hilltoppers' 10-yard line.
"It was just bad quarterback decisions," McCrary said, according to The Tennessean. "... You've got to make sure you don’t make those mistakes because you hurt the team. That changed the whole game."
McCrary beat out Wade Freebeck in a throughout-camp competition for the starting job. He rushed for a career-high 66 yards against Western Kentucky and went 18 for 34 passing for 217 yards and a touchdown, but his two interceptions proved costly. The Commodores also had just 247 yards of total offense and didn't score a touchdown until the final minute; their two-point conversion attempt, a completed pass from McCrary to receiver Nathan Marcus, was stopped just short of the goal line.
"I thought all the way to the end that we were going to win this game,” Vandy coach Derek Mason said, according to the Tennessean. "I am confident of what this team can accomplish. This is a minor hurdle for us, so I just ask that the fan base stay around."
