LSU Tigers release depth chart for season opener

Published Aug. 31, 2015 4:02 p.m. ET

Despite the cancellation of a press conference earlier in the day, the LSU Tigers' week 1 depth chart was released Monday afternoon.

Offensively, the first-string unit is a relatively even mix of upperclassmen and underclassmen. The most notable position battle is at quarterback. Although many expect sophomore Brandon Harris to be the eventual starter at the position, he's still listed as a co-starter with junior Anthony Jennings.

The running back and offensive line groups are arguably the deepest and most talented on the entire team. Leonard Fournette is the obvious leader in the backfield, but keep an eye out for freshmen Nicholas Brossette and Derrius Guice. The trio, along with rising sophomore Darrel Williams, make up potentially the deepest collection of backs in the SEC.

A fascinating development is the inclusion of freshman Maea Teuhema as a co-starter at left guard with fellow freshman William Clapp. The gigantic athlete out of Texas should see substantial play time this season.

There weren't a whole lot of surprises on the defensive side of the ball. Aside from sophomore Davon Godchaux, the projected starting front seven is exclusively comprised of juniors and seniors.

Perhaps the most intriguing note included freshman corner Kevin Tolliver II listed as a co-starter with Dwayne Thomas. Tolliver II was ranked as the No. 27 player overall by Rivals.com. Sophomore Ed Paris is listed as the third-string corner behind the aforementioned duo.

Like many teams in the SEC this season with young quarterbacks, consistency at the position will be key. If Harris or Jennings can take care of the ball and make the occasional play, LSU can rely upon what should be a very dominant rushing attack.
