LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron Needs To Stop Talking About His Job
LSU Tigers interim head coach Ed Orgeron picked up his first win as the top dog in Baton Rouge this past weekend against Missouri, and he’s given the fans a reason to believe in a team that looked down and out. His passion and ability to completely change the offensive focus of this team has given this team hope that they can contend for meaningful postseason games.
Coach O has done a fantastic job so far, and I am very optimistic about the direction he is taking this LSU team. But there’s one thing he continues to do that really irritates me, and that is talk about his job status and the chance he has at becoming the permanent head coach of the Tigers.
While on with Paul Finebaum, Orgeron was asked the question “Do you think you should be the permanent LSU head coach?”
He answered by saying “We’ll we’re going to see. I feel that there’s some support in the administration. I’m from Louisiana but I also understand that pressure to win games at LSU. We have to win games. I think that if we do win games, I will have a fair shot at being the head coach here.”
This is not the first time he has publicly discussed his desire and chances at landing the job, as he has done so multiple times in press conferences and radio interviews.
I’m not trying to knock the guy over his passion for what he’s doing. In a day and age where coaches are practically mercenaries, it’s great to have a guy who is passionate and has local roots leading the team. Orgeron lives LSU football, and his love for the program will do nothing but benefit the team.
I think Coach O is going to do a great job down the stretch, and I would be thrilled if they win out and he is the head coach of the LSU Tigers next season. I think there is a very good chance that it plays out that way, and clearly, that excites him.
But, his willingness to publicly comment on the situation sends a bad message, in my opinion. Nothing major, but it gives off the slight impression that his mind is not 100% focused on the task at hand each and every week. Looking ahead like he’s doing can be a dangerous game, and it’s just not something worth risking.
I am a huge fan of Ed Orgeron. His passion and love for the program combined with his coaching ability and determination make him a winner, and he’s the kind of guy I want coaching this program. But the constant commenting on the future and his job status is something that I am not a fan of. Let’s just take it one week at a time, and if all goes to plan, then we can talk about Ed Orgeron as the long-term guy in Baton Rouge.
