LSU attempting to land first ever consensus No. 1 recruiting class

The LSU Tigers currently have the number one ranked recruiting class via 247 Sports and Scout's current 2016 team rankings, and with several high profile prospects still on their radar, the potential to end there seems very high.

The Tigers currently have commits from the number one rated dual-threat quarterback, the number two safety and cornerback, third ranked guard, sixth best tight end and the seventh best defensive tackle.

With the potential to add five more elite in-state prospects, could this be the best recruiting class in the history of the football program? The Advocate recently spoke to that very subject.

Current linebacker commit Rashaan Thornton on the class: “We’re going to be nasty,” he said. “It’s looking good.”

The 2016 haul is being helped considerably by the talent in the state of Louisiana this season. Nine Pelican State prospects currently rank amongst the top 100 players in the nation. Also helping is LSU's reach into Texas. With the addition of A&M to the SEC now three years into the making, Texas prospects have never been more open to joining programs in the SEC. LSU currently has four Texans committed and may add at least one more to the class.

The coaching staff deserves a huge amount of praise as well. New additions Ed Orgeron, Tony Ball and Kevin Steele all have an eye for talent and have been outworking every program that tries to recruit in Louisiana.

With the defensive transition currently under way at LSU, the team is investing in more diverse front seven players. “John Chavis recruited to a certain mold, and I think Kevin Steele is doing the same, but he’s given LSU a little more flexibility to just go get as many athletes as they can,” Barton Simmons, of 247 Sports, said. “That’s what this class looks like. The front seven is a bunch of really athletic guys who can play anywhere.”

Which comes back to players like Texas linebacker commit Thornton. “The defense recruits,” Thornton said, “look nasty.”

All together they may just make the nastiest class in the nation.
