Alonzo Harris ran for 137 yards and a touchdown as Louisiana-Lafayette took a 37-24 Sun Belt Conference win at Troy on Saturday.
The Ragin' Cajuns (2-0, 1-0 SBC) also got a solid performance from backup quarterback Terrance Broadway, who filled in when starter Blaine Gautier left with a rib injury in the first quarter.
''Terrance prepares like he's the starter,'' Louisiana-Lafayette coach Mark Hudspeth said. ''This is two years in a row we've had to come in here and play Troy without our starting quarterback and that's hard.''
Broadway hit 10 of 16 passes for 143 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harry Peoples to give Louisiana-Lafayette a 27-17 lead in the third quarter.
Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said after the game that he thought Broadway was better than Gautier, the starter who also left last year's 31-17 win over Troy with an ankle injury.
Louisiana-Lafayette's Jemarlous Moten returned a fumble 56 yards for a score in the first quarter, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 14-7 lead. Louisiana-Lafayette led 20-14 at halftime, but stretched the lead to 37-17 in the fourth quarter on Harris' 2-yard touchdown run.
The loss for Troy (1-1, 0-1) spoiled a record-breaking night for quarterback Corey Robinson. He hit 46 of 70 passes for a school-record 485 yards and two touchdowns. Robinson also broke Troy's career passing record and now has 7,786 yards. Receiver Chandler Worthy, who lost the fumble to Moten in the first quarter, had nine receptions for 154 yards.
Louisiana-Lafayette kicker Brett Baer booted three field goals, setting a Sun Belt record with 18 consecutive field goals made. The Ragin' Cajuns forced three Troy turnovers and didn't have any of their own.
''I told our guys, I guaranteed them that if we won the turnover battle, we'd win the game,'' Hudspeth said. ''I told them I'd walk home if we didn't.''
Louisiana-Lafayette held Troy running back Shawn Southward to 33 yards on 16 carries after he ran for 204 yards last week at UAB.
