Key Alabama assistant joining Smart at Georgia
As important as hiring the right head coach is for a program, hiring the right assistants to help execute the vision and culture the head coach wants may be more important. That's especially true for a first time head coach such as Kirby Smart at a high-profile job like Georgia.
Give Smart credit for understanding the importance of his staff, as one of Alabama's key behind the scenes assistants is joining the new Georgia head coach in Athens.
You may be asking who is Glenn Schumann? According to FootballScoop, Schumann is described as an integral member of the Tide's staff under Nick Saban:
Great day to be a Georgia Bulldog!! Wheels up ✈️ #CommitToTheG
— Glenn Schumann (@CoachSchuUGA) December 7, 2015
Judging Smart's staff is obviously premature until he names his coordinators but one of his first hires appears to be a great one for the Bulldogs.
A source told FootballScoop Alabama’s defensive game-planning meetings consist of three people: Saban, Smart and Glen Schumann. Schumann is a well-hidden gear in the machine, titled only “player development/player personnel” on Alabama’s staff directory.
Schumann is a key member of the Tide’s defensive staff, tasked with taking Saban and Smart’s ideas and putting them into words the rest of the staff and players can comprehend.
