Jackson State beats Mississippi Valley State 16-14

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) Brent Lyles threw a touchdown to Dan Williams late in the second quarter to put his team on top for good as Jackson State beat Mississippi Valley State 16-14 on Saturday night.

Lyles had 162 yards passing for the Tigers (2-3, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic) and Williams had 104 yards receiving. Jordan Johnson ran for 114 yards and Joshua Bates ran for 66 yards and a touchdown.

MVSU took a 14-3 lead on short touchdown run by quarterback Austin Bray with 7:38 left in the first half. Bates answered with a touchdown run for the Tigers to help close the gap, 14-10, with 2:55 to go. A fumble recovery by Javancy Jones on MSVU's next possession set up Lyles' winning pass to Williams with 30 seconds to go before halftime.

Neither team scored in the second half.

Bray threw for 164 yards and a score for the Delta Devils (0-5, 0-4).
