It's been 60 years since the state of Texas was this good at football

It was a wild opening weekend of the college football seasonand the state of Texas had the biggest reason to celebrate. The Longhorns shocked Notre Dame with a 50-47 overtime victory. Their long-time hated rivals Texas A&M took care of UCLA at home in overtime. Houston sprung the biggest upset of the season. And oh, by the way, Baylor and TCU took care of business the way we've grown to expect Baylor and TCU to take care of business through the years.

While we knew there would be plenty of shake-ups when the new AP Poll came out Tuesday, the main question was "where would all those Texas schools be ranked?" With the Longhorns going from unranked to No. 11, it gave the Lone Star State five total schools (including the other four mentioned above) in the Top 25.

Which raised an interesting question: As good as football is in Texas, has it ever been this good?

The answer is "Yes." But it's been a long time.

That's because, as my buddy Gabe Bock of points out, it's been nearly 60 years -- 60 -- since the state of Texas has had five teams ranked in the Top 25. In a poll released on September 23rd of 1957, Texas A&M was ranked No. 2, with Baylor, Texas and Houston coming in it No.'s 13, 14 and 15 respectively. Rice, came in at No. 18, giving Texas five teams in the Top 25 that year.

It also raises the question: How long can things stay this good in Texas? It looks like it should last at least one more week. That's because Houston, Texas A&M, Baylor and Texas all play at home this weekend, and facing Lamar, Prairie View A&M, SMU and UTEP respectively shouldn't be challenged. Only TCU faces a truly tough game, against Arkansas. But even that game will be played in Ft. Worth.

Of course as easy as things are now, they get a little tougher in the coming weeks with Texas traveling to Cal and A&M visiting Auburn in Week 3 of the season.

It was undoubtedly a historic week in the state of Texas.

Let's see how much longer it can last.
