Is Stanford's defense a concern as camp opens?
Stanford is known nationally for its incredible defense; however, their could be some issues on that side of the ball this season.
As Jon Wilner of the Contra Costa Times writes, Stanford's defensive backs and defensive line could present some issues:
"The linebackers could be among the Pac-12's best with Blake Martinez manning one of the inside spots and Peter Kalambayi and Kevin Anderson on the outside.
The defensive line and secondary, however, were gutted by attrition and appear vulnerable.
The most experienced linemen, Aziz Shittu and Cal transfer Brennan Scarlett, are coming off serious knee injuries, and there have been more misses than hits on the recruiting trail over the past four years.
The unit's success will depend heavily on the play of sophomore Harrison Phillips and redshirt freshman Solomon Thomas, but Stanford must develop depth. A four-man unit that's heavily reliant upon two injury-prone veterans is, to say the least, a precarious existence.
Cornerback Ronnie Harris is the lone returning starter in a secondary that must contend with the Pac-12's dynamic passing attacks. Contenders on the other side include sophomore Terrence Alexander and redshirt freshman Alijah Holder.
Kodi Whitfield, a former receiver, and Dallas Lloyd, a former quarterback, are top candidates at safety."
