Georgia driven by Tech's claim as 'State Champs'
Despite the fact that the Georgia Bulldogs have taken 12 of the last 14 games against Georgia Tech in the Governor's Cup, last season's loss still haunts some on the team.
The Athens Banner-Herald recently wrote about the Peach State rivalry.
“Yeah, you know, that hurts,” Senior Kolton Houston said. “That game will always hurt. Even when I’m 50, 60 years old. That game will always hurt. But life’s not perfect. You can’t win every game, but we’re going to come back strong this year.”
Following the 30-24 OT win in Athens, Georgia Tech is now referring to themselves as "State Champs". “We just copied Georgia,” Tech coach Paul Johnson said. “They’re the guys who started ‘We Run This State.’ We just kind of played off that.”
The Yellow Jackets used the momentum from that game to dominate Mississippi State in the Orange Bowl by a score of 49-34.
“A big win like that brings a lot of life back into a program,” Tech lineman Adam Gotsis said. “It’s been a while since we’ve won one like that. It’s just great for Georgia Tech. Give credit to Georgia. They’re a great team and it’s always going to be a good game between us just because it is a rivalry.”
With both teams considered consensus preseason top 20 teams and among the favorites to win their respective conferences, the rivalry game could be played with a potential playoff berth on the line.
“No matter where the teams are ranked, it’s one of those games where you always know that something special is going to happen,” said Gotsis. “The last two years that’s really happened, both games going into overtime, both just being heartbreaking for one team. You’ve had the high and the low and I think this year is going to be even better.”
As Houston embarks on his last season in Athens, one of his goals entering the season is quite clear: "We’re going to get that trophy back in our locker room.”
Georgia will have their chance to earn back the Governor's Cup at Georgia Tech on Nov. 28.
