Gardner-Webb outlasts Charleston Southern 17-10

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) Tyrell Maxwell threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Mike Estes with 27 seconds remaining, and Jaylan Foster's end zone interception sealed a 17-10 victory for Gardner-Webb over Charleston Southern on Saturday.

Trailing 17-10 with 20 seconds remaining, Larry Jones III hauled in a 55-yard pass from Robert Mitchell to set the Buccaneers up at Gardner-Webb's 16-yard line. Two plays later, Foster intercepted Mitchell with one second left to end Charleston Southern's five-game winning streak.

Maxwell rushed for 165 yards for Gardner-Webb (4-6, 2-2 Big South), including a 52-yard TD scamper, and passed for 195 yards and the winning score.

Charleston Southern (5-3, 2-1) led 10-7 with 13:11 in the fourth quarter after a 38-yard field goal. The Bulldogs tied it at 10-all with 3:26 left after Paul Schumacher capped a 13-play drive with a 39-yard kick.

Maxwell's 52-yard score tied it 7-7 midway through the third quarter.
