Ga. Tech coach crosses line, apologizes

BY foxsports • November 22, 2011

Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson apologized Tuesday night after referring to a caller to his radio show as a "retard."

The caller, who appeared to be a fan of the rival Georgia Bulldogs, reportedly said on air, "Hello? Hello?" and began barking before either hanging up or being cut off.

Johnson responded by saying, "Anybody who calls into a radio show and barks is either retarded or doesn't have a life."

He later apologized through a school spokesman, saying his comments were meant to be a joke, but "it was a poor choice of words on my part and I sincerely apologize. It was not my intention to offend anyone."

Advocates for people with mental disabilities have campaigned to stop the use of the word "retard," calling it a dehumanizing slur, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
