FSU football will go into the South Florida game with another starter out for the maligned defense. We look at how these injuries will affect the game.

Coach Jimbo Fisher met with the media on Thursday after Florida State wrapped up practice before heading to Tampa to take on South Florida.

Coach Fisher indicated the team had a good week of practice and he likes their mindset. The only thing now is being able to take a good week of practice into the actual game.

He also mentioned that starting defensive end Josh Sweat will miss one or two weeks after having surgery to repair the meniscus he injured last week prior to the Louisville game.

This will be the second game FSU football will be without starting safety Derwin James as well.

FSU loses true freshman receiver Keith Gavin, but gains receiver Ja’Vonn Harrison on offense. Defensive end Adam Torres finally gets off the injured list.

      FSU Injury Impact

It’s not ideal for Josh Sweat to miss any time, but I’d rather he miss this game than the UNC game if he can get back by next week.

It’ll be the same scenario as last week with Jacob Pugh and Brian Burns getting the majority of the snaps. It’ll also be good to have Adam Torres back for added depth. Not sure if he’ll be able to get in the game though.

Keith Gavin is a true freshman they have been trying to get reps in games. He probably wasn’t going to play too much on Saturday, but at least Harrison has some experience and will be back on the field possibly.

Fisher added that Ermon Lane went over to the defense to try his hand at safety since he wasn’t getting much playing time as receiver anymore. That’ll be something to keep an eye, although I don’t expect much from Lane there.

      USF Injury Impact

All of these players are very important for the USF defense as they are some of their better run stoppers.

They were questionable earlier in the week, but USF was optimistic that these players would be available on Saturday.

If they are not able to go, that would affect depth on the USF line, and could be a factor later in the game if FSU football is able to establish the run.

        Conclusion

Aside from missing to five-star starters on defense, the FSU football team is relatively healthy. It’ll be interesting to see how the FSU team responds on the road.

I have a feeling they are going to play close with USF and pull away late, or simply fold like a wet shirt if they get down big again.

Then again, they could finally come out like a bat out of hell and score quickly for once.

Was the FSU coaching staff able to correct enough of the mistakes from last week to make an impact on Saturday? Will Dalvin Cook finally look like Dalvin Cook? Will the FSU offensive line give Francois enough time to attack through the air?

We’ll find out on Saturday at noon.
