Former Miami Hurricanes coach Al Golden interviews with Cowboys

Jason Garrett confirmed after Tuesday’s practice that former Univ. of Miami head coach Al Golden will interview with the Cowboys on Wednesday in Mobile. Garrett wouldn’t specify which position Golden is seeking, but the head coach did mention the defensive backs vacancy that was created when Jerome Henderson left for the Falcons.

The Cowboys struck gold the last time they hired a former Miami head coach as Jimmy Johnson led the team from 1989 to 1993 and won two Super Bowls.

Golden coached at Miami from 2011 to 2015 and went 32-25 during his tenure. Despite his winning record, Golden became the target of Miami fans’ ire as well as former players for not winning more games.

Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said Golden was one of several coaches the team will interview during the offseason.

“He’s somebody that we’ll talk to, yes. I don’t know if he’s going to join it,” Cowboys VP Stephen Jones said of Golden. “But we’re going to be interviewing, there will be several names start to pop up in terms of possible additions to our staff after we lost Jerome. He’s one of them and there’ll be more.”

Prior to coaching at Miami, Golden helped breathe life into Temple football. In five seasons at Temple, Golden compiled a 27-34 record and took the Owls to a bowl game in 2009. Temple had won a total of three games the previous three seasons before Golden took the head coaching job in 2006.
