Fluke play may cost Michigan defensive lineman his season
One of the unresolved stories from Michigan football's preseason camp got some clarity Thursday when coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media in Ann Arbor.
He confirmed sophomore defensive tackle Bryan Mone suffered a "long-term" injury, declaring him out for the season opener against Utah and adding, "There's a good chance he'll miss the season."
Harbaugh then went on to describe how the 6-foot-4, 325-pounder from Salt Lake City, Utah, was injured.
"He broke a bone in his lower leg," said Harbaugh, who described it as a freak play unlike one he had seen before at a practice or a game.
After redshirt freshman defensive back Jabrill Peppers blocked a field goal, the ball was scooped up by a Wolverine who attempted to return it.
Noting that should not be done in a practice, Harbaugh went on to say, "Unfortunately that teachable moment came when one of our players ran around the edge and Bryan was trying to lead block for him.
"They got their feet tangled up, and then when Bryan went to the ground his toe came down at an inopportune angle and unfortunately a bone broke."
Earlier in the week, Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin declined to confirm if Mone would be out to start the year but identified several players who have taken reps at various spots on the defensive line, including Chris Wormley, Mario Ojemudia, Maurice Hurst and Willie Henry.
